Abstract

This exploratory project was to design and develop multimedia math lessons in third grade to improve students’ math learning and cognitive process. A one group pretest posttest design was used. The multimedia math lesson was implemented in two third grade classes of low-income children in January 2010. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected. It was found that the participating teacher and students scored very high on the Teacher Evaluation Rubric survey and Student Feedback Survey respectively; the participating students were very attentive to multimedia math instruction; the participating students scored significantly higher on the quiz at posttest at the end of the implementation than at pretest. The project has significant theoretical and practical implications since it attempted to narrow the math achievement gap for low-income children.
