Abstract

Abstract: Online learning continues to evolve at a rapid pace in higher education. Graduate nursing programs have been offered online at Arkansas State University since 2000. Faculty face many challenges engaging non-traditional students in online courses. In the literature review, three themes emerged which engaged the student in online learning. These themes included: (1) course design, (2) active learning, and (3) faculty presence. This paper provides an overview of the three themes, challenges, evaluation, and redesign of web-based courses by the faculty to ensure success of the non-traditional student.
