Abstract
This study explores the integration of generative AI into English Medium Instruction (EMI) to address pedagogical challenges and enhance learning experiences. With globalization and the rise of English as a lingua franca, Japanese higher education increasingly adopts EMI, facing issues like varied English proficiency and insufficient teacher collaboration. Through semi-structured interviews with 24 students and a questionnaire among 142 participants in a "Media and Communication" course, this research investigates AI's role in improving EMI settings. Findings reveal that AI, particularly through applications like ChatGPT, translation services, and writing aids, significantly aids in language comprehension and course engagement. However, adoption is hindered by concerns over plagiarism and the reliability of AI responses. The study highlights the necessity of technological proficiency and English competence in leveraging AI effectively. Despite limitations, such as sample size, results indicate generative AI's potential to revolutionize educational practices, advocating for further expansive research.
