The Role of Information Technology in Engaging Elementary Students in Mathematical Modeling

This design research study examined how sixth grade students used information technology to build a mathematical model to solve a real world problem. The mathematics educators and authors of this paper worked with four six grade teachers to design a mathematical modeling Lesson Study called “Food for Thought” that explored the real issue of fighting hunger. Results from the analysis of the enacted lessons, teachers’ reflections, students’ work and lesson study debriefs revealed that the design of mathematical modeling lesson elicited students to use information technology to find the necessary data and statistics on hunger, to collaborate on shared documents, to build a mathematical model and to present their creative ideas for the solutions to the problem. Teachers discovered ways to rethink their mathematics instructional practices to promote more mathematical modeling thinking with their elementary students and the use of technology.
