Abstract

Geospatial technology has been identified as one of the three most important emerging fields along with nanotechnology and biotechnology. The application of the technology is expected to grow and become more diversified in the coming years. In Saudi Arabia, the utilization of geotechnology is growing but still limited compared to the Western world. The growth of geomatics technologies could be aided by strategic manpower development through adequate geospatial education. The paper discusses the need for geospatial education and the development of the emerging technology in the Kingdom. It highlights the status of geomatics education and elaborates on the demand for skilled geospatial personnel by the industry. It also discusses the challenges hindering the development of geomatics education. The field of geomatics will develop further if adequate and needed attention is given to geospatial education and training. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)
