Abstract

I discuss the development of a second Online Learning Platform, called ICZ (Idea Construction Zone) that has the following features which are missing from eCampus: rich text postings; multimodal postings (diagrams; audio and video; embedded Flash); wiki-style editable postings; synthesis postings; posting sorting options; and greater instructor control of discussion threads. The aim in developing ICZ was (1) to take advantage of the increasingly multimodal and collaborative nature of online communication, (2) to blur the distinction between what is course content and what is course discussion and (3) to provide tools that support collaboration and knowledge construction. The case of ICZ provides an opportunity to reflect on (1) the consequences of developing in-house technological solutions versus purchasing off-the-shelf software and (2) the features that we might want in an Online Learning Platform so as to take advantage of the increasingly multimodal and collaborative potential of the Web.
