Abstract

The nisotak mobile application is intended to provide language instruction and exercises for learning Cree syntax (word and sentence formation). The project involves the development of a database of morphemes and syntactic structures, a backend, auxiliary tool to serve content created and updated by the teachers, and a front-end, client application for learning and practicing Cree syntax through engaging and culturally relevant activities. In this paper, we discuss how the socio-geographic-linguistic context presented some challenges for app development. We discuss our approaches to mitigate the challenges. We then review the stages of development: the content plan, the content-input interface, and the learner interface. We will end with a discussion of the contribution to the field of mobile and blended learning, the significance to revitalization and maintenance of the Cree language, and how we will be structuring our research once the app has been built.
