Abstract: Teaching, like any other profession, requires in-service education on a continuous basis for ensuring professional development of the practitioners. Therefore, the lndira Gandhi National Open University and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti collaborated in facilitating the professional development of teachers of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas through a specially designed training programme - Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development of Teachers. The programme was launched in 2004; and in 2005 and 2006 feedback on its various aspects was collected from the target group. It was found that although there was wide acceptance regarding the need for the programme in nurturing professionalism, but some academic components needed to be replaced by certain others to enhance its relevance. It was also found that the learners had been facing a number of problems that were not strictly academic in nature but were nevertheless important for the successful completion of the programme. These findings about the programme have been highlighted in this paper to demarcate the areas of strength and those that demand immediate attention.
