Although many factors have propelled the growth of online classes, several aspects are still not completely understood concerning the offering of higher education courses in an online distance education environment. Too many colleges are focusing on the technology of online classes rather than on the teaching and learning that takes place. Though there appears to be continued support in institutions of higher education to provide this option, technology, delivery systems, and methods emerge as areas of concern. The most likely threat to the potential success of distance education are underfunded, undermanned, poorly designed, and poorly managed programs.

This study identifies faculty members' perceptions and perceived level of support toward online distance education being offered at the University of Memphis.

The University of Memphis is transitioning from traditional classroom methods of offering higher education courses to a dual mode system, increasing its enrollments by offering courses through online distance education. It will need to provide not only the reliable technology needed to deliver the content, but also training, guidance, and support to its faculty.

It is vital to the governing institution to recognize the importance of the faculty's attitudes and perceptions toward online distance education. As such, this analysis identifies areas that will help administrators support the proper design, preparation, and facilitation of online courses offered at the University of Memphis.
