Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine college faculty attitudes towards benefits and costs of participation in OpenCourseWare (OCW), and level of content sharing. In addition, relationships among faculty participation in OCW, their assessments of costs and benefits to its use, content feedback, content protection, and their sense of OCW's contribution toward institutional sustainability were examined.

Faculty from nine member institutions of the OpenCourseWare Consortium and Yale University were identified through their institutions' websites, and requested to participate in an online survey. Survey data revealed overall positive perceptions of participating in an OCW program. Further, the more positive the perception of individual benefits, the greater the sense of OCW's contribution to institutional sustainability. However, there were significant differences between the attitudes of tenured and non-tenured faculty in regards to the individual benefits from participating in OCW. Tenured faculty attitudes were more negative overall regarding OCW. This makes the need for incentives for participation more important. In addition, a majority of respondents expressed a lack of knowledge regarding copyright and licensing procedures for their content. As the online presence of higher education continues to grow, this issue might have a substantial influence on faculty participation in future open education initiatives. Both faculty and administration will need to work together to ensure the protection of intellectual property rights.
