An Online Professional Development Collaboration: Transforming the practices of TVET Teacher Educators

This paper reports on an international, online, professional development project with teacher educators, implemented during the 2020-2021 pandemic year. Research shows that many teacher educators are comfortable with traditional, teacher directed instruction and lecture formats. The goal of this Canada – Jamaica collaboration was to provide PD on inquiry-based learning (IBL) and support action research on practice. Participants taught in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teacher education program at a Jamaican University. Research questions were: How did the CAR influence the beliefs and/or behaviors of educators with regard to IBL? What were some of the challenges experienced by lecturers implementing IBL online during the pandemic? The research methodology was collaborative action research (CAR). Five lecturers engaged in a CAR cycle the included: 1) a Zoom needs assessment, 2) an online IBL workshop, 3) implementation of IBL in practice and 4) reflection on practice. Data included transcripts of online meeting and workshop, Google doc activity template, and post reflection narratives. Preliminary findings indicate that the online PD allowed participants to share multiple interpretations of IBL practice; gave participants insights on types of inquiry to fit the goals of instruction; and provided new information useful to their practice. The findings will include challenges experienced teaching online and provide direction for designing online PD.
