UDL for Inclusive Science Education

Universal design for learning (UDL) (Meyer, Rose & Gordon, 2014) suggests that we can create learning experiences that are accessible and effective for the wide range of learners. English learners (EL) are a growing population in our nation and must be considered in our universal design efforts. The researchers will share a project between an urban elementary school with majority EL population and university faculty. The goals were to use technologies strategically to make science learning accessible and engaging for 4th and 5th graders ELs building their science vocabulary and background knowledge to strengthen their ability to access science content through reading in their integrated classrooms. We will share successes in teacher training and student learning as well as lessons we learned throughout this process.
