Abstract

IBM is seeking to help teacher education and professional development through the design of innovative technologies. A far ranging collaboration has been devised incorporating nine primary partners. The Teachers' Workplace system aims to support a diverse learning community centered on teachers documenting their practice in portfolios. The design of the system benefited from a user-centered design process. The resulting system emphasizes Web-based content management of portfolios and collaboration around documents. In addition, the system is architected to allow extensive customization. Overall the system is intended to promote the visibility of teacher practice. Making teaching practice visible enables individual teachers to reflect on their practice and share their practice with others, thus allowing valuable lessons to be shared and documenting professional accomplishments.
