Digital technologies and new literacies: Transforming teachers’ pedagogies

This presentation will draw on qualitative data generated from both online and face to face interactions with classroom teachers throughout a teacher research professional development program in one school district in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The presenters will describe the pedagogical activities designed by the presenters and those designed by teachers to expand students' literacies and perspectives on knowledge, community and ways of being in the world. Using digital tools and resources available through the Internet (Web 2.0) the teachers of grades K to11 implemented different teaching practices and used technology as agent of change, shifting the locus of learning to students themselves. The presenters will discuss the affordances of digital technologies (Ning, blog, digital storytelling) and the 21st century skills for teacher and student learning and transforming pedagogies in relation to new literacies.
