Adaptive e-learning for all: integrating cultural-awareness as context in user modeling

This paper presents a new approach to user modeling in e-learning, taking into account contextual aspects, such as technological, educational, personal, and specially cultural context to improve personalization capabilities. The main features of our approach are described and illustrated by means some examples from AdaptWeb® (an actual adaptive educational system being used in different universities today), showing how context and culture could be modeled for personalization, making use of a set of ontologies for representing explicitly this rich context as an extension of traditional student modeling.
