Abstract

Instructional technologies such as podcasts are effective at conveying information to students. Despite their many benefits, using such technologies leaves students as passive learners. The purpose of this paper is to suggest that educators adopt another technology, online talk radio shows, to blend the strengths of podcasts with more active participation in online learning. This conceptual paper defines the characteristics of online talk radio shows, argues that online talk radio shows can be a superior form of instructional technology for promoting student engagement, provides a brief “how to” guide for educators in visiting and hosting shows, and offers lesson and activity ideas towards using online talk radio shows.
