Design Principles for Making Meaningful Mathematics Apps

We have developed a series of free iOS Apps to support children in learning mathematics concepts and procedures through play and exploration. Through the development process, several design principles were identified and refined including: a) keep it simple (interface and focus), b) provide meaningful models and/or manipulatives to support sense-making, c) support individual needs, and d) support parents, teachers, tutors and researchers. MathTapper apps are not intended to be stand-alone game-based learning programs - rather they are designed to support teachers as they engage children in classroom discussions and activities and then act as a resource for children as they engage in individual exploration and practice to develop understanding and fluency. They are also designed to support parents as they review and explore mathematics topics with their children in any-time, any-place, any-pace micro-tutoring interactions, and then encourage them to build accuracy and fluency through short practice sessions.
