Abstract

The authors of this presentation are all experienced instructors of totally online courses. The presentation will consist of aids and cautions in teaching a totally online introductory graduate course in statistics for educators. Problems discussed will include coping with and reducing mathematics anxiety of education students and the most appropriate relative emphasis of hand calculations of statistical formulae versus use of computer statistical packages. Attendees will be given the URL and password to all course pages including all 16 weeks of lectures, all 16 homework assignments and handouts, and a list of statistical Websites of use in teaching pivotal statistical concepts without laborious arithmetical calculations. The overall goal of this presentation will be to illustrate how introductory statistics can be taught in a totally online format without alienating or intimidating education graduate students, many of whom have less than sophisticated mathematical backgrounds.
