Abstract

The study presents new qualitative data on the usability challenges and emotional reactions of blind students in their attempts to access educational materials and to communicate with colleagues in online courses using Blackboard Vista. The study discusses the extent to which failure to use and access Blackboard Vista by blind students impacts their academic attainment at the university level. These discussions provide a basis for future experimental research and statistical analysis. The study suggests that the university administration, developers of adaptive software, and designers of academic databases should work jointly in developing enhanced user interfaces to ensure universal access and usability of Blackboard Vista and minimize frustrations and its resultant educational inequities.
