Abstract
In this paper we discuss and illustrate an innovative research and development project, the Access Portal Initiative (API), which builds on and expands principles and practices of universal access and design to all users. The Access Portal Initiative involves the ongoing development, testing, and application of an innovative, web-based interface that converts existing educational websites, regardless of their accessibility features, into alternative literacy and 508 accessible formats that can be accessed and comprehended by a wide range of web-users who are currently excluded due to limited literacy level or inability to read. Rather than expecting designers of individual sites to provide these features, the portal houses them server-side so that the portal’s automated translation options can be accessed, invoked and controlled by any user from any computer with Internet access.
