Abstract

This brief paper describes the application of video and vlog entries from video-sharing websites, such as YouTube, to psychiatry medical education. Because video can demonstrate and exemplifies the nuances of psychiatric behaviors, signs and patient symptoms better than they are explicated in paper-and-pencil ‘patient’ cases, this paper describes how video ‘patient’ cases from video-sharing websites were incorporated into a web-based learning unit for second year medical students. Initial pilot testing of this psychiatry video learning unit on third year medical students (M3)received positive ratings using a modified Likert scale and constructive responses on the amount of material covered, required completion time, and usefulness of the materials presented in this learning unit. M3 students constructive feedback was incorated into the learning unit, which will be introduced to second year psychiatry behavioral science course students in January 2010.
