Abstract

In the studies of the learning communities, it is said that the presence of an Avatar has become an identity, or Avatars could promote the revitalization of the discussions. This time, we analyzed whether or not an Avatar could influence the learning motivation of students, instead of looking at an Avatar only as a promoter or the community. We did this analysis by using actual usage data on an Avatar service which was a part of a paper and Web Blended Learning service “Plus i”, released in March 2008 for the 7th–grade students. We believe that Avatars will be, if we use them correctly, very valuable asset for the e-learning by providing a good starting point for the learning and by bringing about a good influence on the learning habits.
