Abstract

Moving a course online is not simply taking a syllabus and face-to-face classroom activities online. It calls for a paradigm shift in pedagogy. When a course moves online, communication dynamics are altered. Non-verbal communication cues disappear, and since students converse asynchronously, spontaneous interaction is impossible. Moving a course online is not about putting more time and energy in designing a course. It is about modifying strategies of instruction. Instructors need to understand not only what they want to teach, but also who the students are. Do they learn more in a collaborative and sharing information type environment? Or do they learn better in a more structured environment with the instructor as an expert? Do they learn more in talking and listening, or reading and writing, or all of the above? These are questions that need to be addressed when moving a course online.
