Abstract

This paper introduces a new type of reading course that avoids using complex structures and an overload of lexical items at the beginner’s level. The course was developed by didactizing texts and applying the idea of task-cycling (Levi & Kennedy, 2004) to tasks, reading strategies and grammar. It was taught at the University of Victoria in Canada in spring of 2009. Class observation showed that students worked well following the self-study online format of the course.
