Toward Understanding Student and Faculty Perceptions of Teaching, Learning and Disaster Resilience in Second Life

Second Life (SL) is one example of a virtual, three-dimensional world which we have been using for a variety of instructional, research, and administrative purposes. This paper examines four areas: 1) What is Second Life (SL)? 2) Curriculum: Teaching and Learning in SL 3) Proof of Concept Work, and 4)What we’ve learned so far. Meetings, conferences, groups, and full courses have been offered at our site with successes and some problems. In general the stability of SL as an on-line platform has improved during the two years that courses have been offered, and the site has grown from a single island to five islands in our consortium estate. We offer suggestions for administration of island estates and supporting instruction in a virtual world as well as teaching and learning.
