Abstract

This presentation is a report of the transformation of a school of nursing’s post-licensure education delivery from traditional face -to -face to a distance education delivery methodology. The transformation is presented under the theoretical framework of the Theory of Diffusion of Innovation as program options were introduced and evolved to a distance education and technology mediated delivery format. Discussed are programmatic concerns, barriers and challenges for faculty and students, and student and program achievements. Approaches to provision and evaluation of clinical skills and competencies are addressed. The resulting transformation has increased educational avenues for registered nurses and represents a strategic approach to both the national nursing shortage and health care disparities.
