Abstract

This case study discusses the work done to improve Hezinet, the commercial system for distance language learning whose new version is called ELSA, by adding a computerized adaptive admission test generator. Not only the implementation of the new module has been completed, but, to make it functional, also the calibration of an item bank has been required. The paper presents the work done to accomplish both tasks, as well as the outcomes obtained in each case. Although it is necessary to append some difficult items to the bank, the preliminary results show that the system works well enough to decide, by administering less than 30 items, the starting level in Hezinet for any low-middle skilled beginner.
