This paper presents findings from a qualitative case study which investigates the use of handheld technologies as a means to support inquiry-based science learning within the context of the elementary school classroom.The context of this study was defined by a fifth grade elementary school classroom which engaged in a water quality study of a local lake.Analysis of the collected data (video-taped interactions and interviews) illustrated that the handhelds appeared to be supportive of the task of the outdoor environmental study, particularly because of the fact that the students were able to concurrently gather, report and organize the data collected at the site.
