Abstract

This paper describes a professional development initiative facilitated by university faculty aimed at providing middle grades teachers with an innovative new literacies approach to teaching language more effectively. Teachers were provided with ongoing instruction and support, as well as a research-based language curriculum, allowing them to maximize the limited amount of time given to language instruction. Instead of focusing on decontextualized grammar activities, facilitators provided teachers with content knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and new technologies so they, in turn, could have students engage in language exploration and awareness integrated with local, regional, and state culture and history. Results included a more sophisticated understanding of and respect for language variations and contexts, and an increased awareness of Standard English. Research focused on the extent to which an implicit TPCK approach, including research-based curricula, innovative pedagogy, and newer technologies, affected teachers' ability to teach language effectively.
