Preservice Science Teachers’ Use of Educational Technology in Student Teaching

Abstract

This study focuses on how preservice science teachers integrated educational technology into secondary science instruction during student teaching. Data includes interviews, classroom observations, lesson plans and artifacts, and surveys. The results revealed that preservice science teacher participants had the capacity, intent and opportunity to integrate technology in their science teaching. Participants made choices of technology use aligned with both state standards and with appropriate use guidelines. The novice preservice teacher participants utilized a variety of electronic technology tools and to help students gather and analyze data and to view scientific visualizations. While novice teachers implemented some lessons where secondary students used the technology, in most reported instances, the teacher was the primary user of the technology tools.
