Abstract

Information technologies are permeating all areas of education and becoming increasingly more accessible to a wider student population. This paper considers a one year pilot study involving 10 student teachers who created an online course and evaluated its use during their school placement. The use of the Open Source software MOODLE is discussed as an alternative teaching tool and how it can be used as a mechanism for encouraging reflection and evaluation of wider pedagogical issues by offering a focal point for student teachers to apply their knowledge of how children learn in a real context. The ease with which these trainee teachers can adapt and adopt these new technologies in the classroom environment is also evaluated.
