Gaming Geography: Using Minecraft to Teach Essential Geographic Skills

Can the sandbox video game Minecraft be used as an effective tool to teach upper elementary/middle school students essential geographic skills? I am currently designing a study with the help of undergraduate students in our teacher education program to explore this research question. As we are in the process of designing the instructional tasks and assessments to be implemented with school age children during the summer of 2015 we would like to share our ideas with others interested in gamification, generally, and in the applications of Minecraft in education, specifically, in a roundtable format. I am also interested to find out if others have experiences working with undergraduate students on research projects like this and to discuss strategies for successful implementation.
