Abstract

Several software tools aiming at helping students to learn school algebra have been developed since the 1990’s. All of them have both benefits and drawbacks. Aplusix (a + x) is a new software tool with potentially new opportunities for learning school algebra. Aplusix has been evaluated on the basis of several experiments in different countries. Researchers concluded that Aplusix has shown to be a usable software tool, enhancing students’ learning of school algebra. However, despite the promising results, research work still remains to be done to fully exploit the affordances of the tool. The purpose of this paper is to use an instrument to assess the educational value of Aplusix for learning school algebra. The paper also addresses implications and some supporting conditions that help placing Aplusix as an integral tool in teaching algebra in a school environment
