Abstract
This study intends to do an overview of the impact of information technology on language education. The review covers ten major journals in this field from 1999 to 2009, and selected books published in the past three years and reviewed in major journals. Three main directions are categorized to demonstrate research trends and to identify key issues directly related to IT on language education. First, “IT for teaching” provides teachers with both theoretical constructs and pedagogical practice, including the employment of existing online resources, introduction of presenting tools (i.e. website, presentation software, online file storage), and management of multimedia labs. Second, “IT for learning” focuses on investigating current technologies in language learning. Uses of fourteen media (i.e. MSN, IM, Yahoo Messenger, SKYPE (VoIP), mobile, podcasting, IPod, GOOGLE, and Wikipedia) are addressed. Third, “IT in schools” explores IT in curriculum, distance course and teacher education.
