Abstract
Abstract: Computer Science (CS) for All, a national initiative in the United States, faces a steep challenge in finding and preparing classroom teachers to teach CS, especially in non-urban areas. The study described in this paper reports how online professional development (PD), modified from the existing in-person Exploring Computer Science (ECS) program, was iteratively developed to strengthen teachers’ professional learning community and support their initial year of teaching of CS. The online instructional environment described in this study provides an exemplar for how a hybrid professional learning community design can concurrently build the specialized content knowledge, inclusive belief systems, and pedagogical skills of CS teachers. In particular, we highlight how a facilitated learning community model of PD and concrete instructional design strategies can support a professional learning community of educators.
