Abstract

This paper discusses a goal-oriented project called Distance Learning in Multimedia Networks (ETÄKAMU) <URL: http://matwww.ee.tut.fi/kamu/> that is a part of the Finnish Multimedia Programme (FMP). The project started on the 1st of February 1996 and lasted until January 1999. The project combined the efforts of Finnish telecommunication companies, content providers, publishing houses, hardware companies and educational institutions in the field of distance learning. One of the main goals of the project was to develop and pilot pedagogically appropriate and technically functional open learning environments. In this paper we present the main results of the project.
