Abstract

This case study, interpretive research exposed the effects of learning about mathematical functions through explorations with Global Position Systems (GPS), motion detectors, spreadsheets and descriptions in a documentary website have on enhancing the K-8 teachers’ four strands of mathematics proficiency. Fourteen teachers in a two-week, half day summer institute were engaged in a graduate course that utilized these technologies, website creation, and digital cameras to develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence adaptive reasoning, and productive dispositions, preparing them to become more fluent in mathematics and in teaching mathematics. Analysis of multiple data sources indicated that not only did the teachers develop their understanding of the mathematical functions in question, but they also increased their ability and understanding of the meaningful integration of learning technologies into their classroom activities.
