Abstract

This paper introduces an interactive information system utilizing the Web 2.0 interface design for geology field studies and the result of the application of this system on a petrology class at Ball State University. The learner-centered system affords a learning platform that allows geology students to interact with each other dynamically online, to learn together, and to create a shared digital repository of field experiences under the guidance of the course instructor. As a result, students take an active role in the control of their learning process, class activities happen and continue beyond the classroom, and collaborative learning replaces the traditional lecture-format learning, all better address students’ learning needs and preferences.
