Teaching as a concept has been defined variously by various scholars. The main thrust of this paper is to examine various definitions of teaching, examine phases of teachers in Nigeria context, identify the roles expected of a university teacher, examine the shortfall and proffer means of ameliorating the shortcomings in order to enhance quality assurance in Nigerian educational system.
