Exploring the Fit of an Information Technology Course to the ICT Literacy of Trainee Teachers

A new model of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) literacy development was introduced in the postgraduate course "Information technology in education". A longitudinal questionnaire-based study was initiated to investigate the appropriateness of ICT literacy training. The study applies a broad dynamic model of ICT literacy and investigates six aspects: 1) student's experience with ICT; 2) general ICT-related cognitive capabilities; 3) technical ICT capabilities; 4) independent ICT learning capacities; 5) ICT coping strategies; 6) beliefs about the use of ICT in future career. This paper analyzes initial results. It examines the fit of the new model to the initial level of ICT literacy of the Master of Teaching degree students. The findings indicate that students start pre-service training having very different levels of ICT literacy. The new curriculum fits an average level of ICT literacy of students quite well. Nevertheless some future changes need to be implemented to accommodate the diversity of students needs.
