In this continuing project on digital competence, we look to better understand the development of digital skills from a longitudinal perspective. Building on previous studies into the use of technology for learning in Middle school students, the present single case study uses a mixed methods approach to examine the acquisition and retention of digital skills over time in teaching staff and students from a newly equipped technology-rich elementary school. Our study aims to contribute to an apparent dearth in the literature regarding the development of lifelong digital literacy skills. We still do not fully understand how ICT skills are acquired and how they evolve over time in young people growing up in a digital world. This study builds on preliminary results showing that certain digital skills or competencies seem to last over time such as technological resourcefulness, digital self-efficacy (or empowerment) and open-mindedness towards technology.
