Abstract

Quality online learning will lead to new and more relevant opportunities for students to learn content and how to think for themselves. Planning an easy to manage, engaging, easy to navigate, online learning environment is important to student success and ultimately to student satisfaction. There are many discussions about the need for learning objectives to drive online course structure but there is little focus on organizing elements in the learning environment – what should be included, how and why? Faculty who are new to teaching online look for guidance in best course development practices in order to create an environment where students can easily navigate course material, engage in active learning experiences, and feel comfortable. This paper focuses on recommendations, options, and explanations for developing an online course that is efficient, effective, and provides the learner with an exceptional experience.
