Benefits and Challenges of Applying Research Based Wiggins Backward Design Model to Standardized Curriculum for an Online University PROCEEDING

In 2014 and 2015 Independence University started a curriculum redevelopment agenda to enhance standardized curriculum by teaming Subject Matter Experts with a trained professional in curriculum development that used the research based Wiggins Backward Design Model, to redesign standardized curriculum. Wiggins suggests a simple three step process of (1) identifying and writing clear measurable learning objectives, (2) creating the assessment questions or task to specifically align to each learning objective and (3) finding resources and creating lessons that align directly with those learning objectives. The simplicity and effectiveness of this design made it possible to create a standardized process for all curricula developed. There were challenges, but the result included a stronger more focused curriculum and higher success rates with students in courses redeveloped using this model. This presentation will address the model and challenges face in implementing such a design strategy.
