Abstract

Online learning tools present a unique opportunity to improve outcomes for many adult learning programs. In particular, wikis allow users to collaborate and edit an online document, which can stimulate reflection and interaction. In this study, we surveyed a group of teachers who were completing an “online induction” course needed for licensing purposes in the state of California. Our study examined the relationship between perceptions of the benefits of utilizing wikis during the training program and reported enhancement of teaching skills resulting from participation in the program. In addition, we posited that teachers who used metacognitive strategies during the online program would benefit through increased learning and development. Our results found support for the benefits of wiki use for online teacher education, however metacognitive activity was not shown to moderate these benefits.
