Abstract

This report focuses on the design, implementation, and assessment of a web based learning module whose development was sponsored by a Federal government agency. The ?LM2? module is intended to support a distance learning experience and to promote skills that facilitate virtual teamwork in synchronous modes. The learning outcomes for LM-2 - collaboration, critical thinking, and metacognition - were situated within a problem-based learning scenario. The design and production of LM2 took place within a much larger project in which three learning modules were developed to teach participants how to collaborate in a virtual team environment. A synchronous, shared concept mapping tool - Mind Manager - was employed by the participants to develop grpahic representations of a problem solution. The use of visualization in virtual, collaborative problem solving shows some promise but will require further research to determine what methods of team engagement are best suited for this venue.
