Abstract
Although web-based learning systems (WBLS) have a lot of advantages over traditional face-to-face learning, they have certain limitations that hinder the learning process. For example, current web based systems do not allow the integration of discussions with the domain content. Therefore the discussions do not take place in the context of a domain problem as they do in face-to-face tutorial environment. Most existing systems do not provide the expressions and oral explanations, that a human teacher provides in a traditional classroom scenario. The students therefore miss out the impact of teacher's gestures in the learning process. To circumvent these types of problems, a prototype Web-based Asynchronous Synchronous Environment (WASE) is developed that provides simultaneous low-bandwidth streaming of lecture video and presentation, while facilitating students with presentation annotation facilities, and peer discussion on particular issues related to the topic.
