Abstract

Defining videotex and teletext as the most revolutionary innovations in communication since the invention of movable type, this paper describes The Interactive Videotex Project of public television station KPBS in San Diego, California. Following a brief overview of videotex and teletext technologies, the paper discusses (1) the development of the Interactive Videotext Project and its first televised series, "Understanding Your Investments"; (2) the INDAX two-way cable system; (3) videotex design elements, including the nature of the medium, the content area, the users, and the technical parameters; (4) the working model of the instructional design of the investment series; (5) considerations in designing and writing videotex screens, including the INDAX system design, the needs of the user, and subject matter; (6) the step-by-step development of one lesson in the investment series; (7) the evaluation of the Project; and (8) the role of videotex on public television. Appendixes contain description of the working model for the investment series and other materials drawn from the Project. (FL)
