Abstract

We report our experience in designing an in-house developed mobile app to engage geology students in the learning of mineral identification that was previously done by a paper-based worksheet. The app allows the students to record their testing results of various mineral properties and to submit the result in a pdf file via email while keeping a digital copy themselves. Students can reach instructor’s responses instantly via app so that corrections to their work can be followed without delay. Compared with the traditional learning process, this app improves the productivity, speeds up the grading process, and allows the students to keep a digital copy of their work for future reference.
