Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of online professional development for inservice Computer Discovery Teachers. This examination was conducted for the following reasons: (a) to determine if teachers would choose to receive training online who were qualified by their tests' scores, (b) to determine if the teachers who received online training were as prepared to teach Computer Discovery as the teachers who received training face-to-face, (c) to determine if teachers who chose to receive online training would choose to do it again if provided with the opportunity, (d) and to offer recommendations for future Computer Discovery trainings. Finally, this study was conducted to add to the research-based knowledge on online professional development for teachers.

The data that were collected in this study included the keyboarding scores, the scores from the Computer Literacy Proficiency Test, the Office of Vocational and Technical Education Tech Prep Teacher Workshop Evaluation Form, and the scores from specific technology areas. These areas were: (a) word processing, (b) drawing, (c) desktop publishing, (d) database, (e) spreadsheet, and (f) keyboarding. Overall this study found positive findings for the effectiveness of online training for inservice Computer Discovery teachers.

Recommendations were made to decision makers for future Computer Discovery teachers. Some recommendations include: (a) that computer classes in a higher educational setting be a requirement for selection as a Computer Discovery teacher, (b) that teachers continue to participate in technology training session opportunities, (c) that online trainings be developed and offered to teachers, and (d) that teachers be introduced to Blackboard.com™ before the training session.
