A field test examined the effectiveness of the CAI lesson: Adventures in Life Cycles With Oscar and Buttercup. The software is a science program written by the researcher to teach first grade students the concept of living and non-living, the definition of organism, important characteristics of insects and amphibians, as well as their life cycles. The study was conducted over a three-day period at a suburban Elementary School in Long Beach with 24 first grade students. The analysis indicates that after the use of the program, the student scores on the post-test increased significantly from their pre-test scores. It was concluded that the CAI lesson in question was effective in teaching the life science skills to first grade students.
